You Ask - I Answer
DO I NEED TO BE AN ARTIST/HAVE ARTISTIC TALENT?
The short answer... absolutely not. Art therapy doesn't require any "talent" or skill. In Art Therapy, you can simply expect to work in a partnership with an Art Therapist utilizing simple art materials in a creative process. Utilizing art in this counseling technique can help provide alternative forms of communication to enhance the physical, mental, and emotional well-being of individuals of all ages. While art therapy is certainly one of the tools that can be utilized, it is by no means the only one. Each patient brings a unique life experience and sessions are tailored to meet the needs of each individual person.
HOW LONG DOES EACH THERAPY SESSION TAKE?
Typical art therapy sessions last for approximately 45 minutes. Therapy sessions are designed to build upon one another, allowing individuals to gain long-term skills and insight that will help bolster their abilities to manage stress in their daily lives. This means that, while occasionally one or two therapy sessions can be beneficial, working with your therapist consistently over a longer period of time tends to yield more benefits and results.
WHAT THERAPY TECHNIQUES DO YOU USE?
My training is primarily in art therapy, which can be incorporated into a variety of counseling theories. In therapy, I integrate art therapy within a cognitive-behavioral therapy context. This allows me to utilize the visual tool of art and art making while integrating skill-building that can be utilized outside of treatment sessions. That being said, I have also been trained in cognitive behavioral therapy, dialectical behavior therapy, and trauma-informed therapy. Sessions certainly do not need to incorporate art therapy, but this unique tool has been helpful to individuals looking for a different experience to therapy services.
